The last supper

So the hotel wasn't the best - you never know what you are going to get! I had a shower and the water went everywhere and the we got chastised for flooding the gym downstairs! Ha! So fit a proper shower then!

We had a scary moment when we ordered food as the chef came out and - well not too sure how to put it - seemed a couple of Global Knives short of a full culinary set so we were suddenly rather concerned about our orders. Actually it wasn't too bad and there was a pool table and (windy) balcony to smoke on so had a good evening all in all.

Walking holiday done. Good time had.

Happy Birthday Rupert! :-)

Trailhead

Eventually arrived at Prestatyn. The walk still had a last little surprise for us as right at the very last point we had to climb up to the top of a cliff and back down again. Mickey actually ran the last bit - we were pretty pleased to arrive.

So eventually we arrived at the coast where Offa's Dyke trail start and our walk ended.

Traditionally you are supposed to take off you boots and run into the sea! I must say it was pretty good to arrive at he coast as you could see it in the distance right from day 1 and you really felt that you had got somewhere when you arrived. Job done and very enjoyable it was too!

Final Destination 5

Well our navigation skills must be bad because quite literally God has personally intervened and given us the clearest sign to where we were headed!

This is our hotel: the end of the rainbow!

He couldn't afford a big one!

Actually just a little further on we came across some horses. This one is Brian's best equine friend!

Strange shit man!

So I'm walking across this field, and as fields go it's pretty much like any other field. I must have been feeling a bit tired as I was looking down watching my step as, like any other field, it was pretty much littered with piles of crap. Except this was different crap. So my mind is wandering and I'm thinking that it doesn't lo like sheep shit because that's all little chocolate Minstrels piled up in little mounds but it's definitely not cow pooh as that's lovely big chocolate pancakes festooned around - and then I looked up and it hit me - almost literally - there was Mr. Llama! Or was it Mrs. Alpaca! Made me laugh at the surprise though :)

Last day walking

Again with the climbing! Always the climbing! Always first thing in the morning and after big breakie! This morning especially steep - took us a good 40mins to get up but of course it's great when you've done it!

Must admit a lot of the day we kept on thinking we'd done the last hill only to be proved wrong!!! Actually it was a pretty enjoyable days walking though.

Best place to stay!

Pub not too far from the end of the walk and arrived in time to see 2nd half of footie - something about final rounds and leagues or something - whatever - but everybody else seemed to think it was important ;)

Couple of drinks late and off to find our farm house. Took a while to get there but actually turned out to be the best place we stayed on a walk. We turned up and they had tea and scones all ready for us and it was in a really well done up old house with land and rare breed pigs knocking about.

The evening meal was served - they basically set it all up in the kitchen and left us to it. Wine, fresh asparagus, home made lasagne, wine, crumble and wine! Woo! Had our own nook with floppy sofas and tele and big rustic kitchen with massive able to eat around. Top place (people were a bit odd though!).

Breakfast equally good so all in all a good stay.

It's like walking on a road

A few navigational "features" - we missed a turn off the road - luckily we realised but had no idea which way we should go - the road went on for miles over a flat and featureless moor. Nick ran back and found the path but had to wait as Barry had gone the other way. Anyway no problem and soon got ourselves walking through a forest. Had a little break in the sunny shelter of the trees. Wasn't too far down from there to our destination - actually a really nice walk.

Don't take me to the tower!

So suddenly there was a major climb to the tower. Really windy up there - hats blowing off and everything. A bit of shelter behind the wall but it mostly acted as a funnel to create howling blasts. We moved on quick!

The next day

Feet recovered and ready for more. Slap up breakie and then off again. Today felt a little more out into the wilds.

Happily most of the day spent walking along the ridge tops so not too much uppie downies.

The Druid

Actually a welcome place to stop - room tiny above the pub but a friendly place all the same. Had a good dinner - proper 3 courses so I was stuffed after. Fad a few drinks and then slept like a proverbial - pooped innit!

Bloody long walk!

So the rest of the day took about 9 hours walking all in all! Kept on thinking there were no more hills to climb but there were!

Climbed up over really exposed ridges, thought we were gong to be blown off. It was way to windy to talk even! Had lunch sheltered behind a wall. Up over and great views all around - all in all quite bracing! Eventually got to the road where the Druid Inn was - and guess what - it was still another 2 1/2 miles along the road to get there. By e time we arrived pretty knackered - I think the longest days walk to date. Glad to get shoes off and get a beer.

Hangover finally gone though :)
